Part of the charm of Jekyll Island is the Georgia Sea Turtle CenterTurtle at the center. The center has information about the local turtles of coastal Georgia. You are able to adopt a turtle and help the center feed and monitor the turtles once they venture out into the Atlantic Ocean. While the turtles are mostly endangered there are simple things you can do to help this dyeing breed. I will bet you have been to the beach and dug a hole. Either to lay in or to cover grandma's toes. Be sure to fill those holes in so next time you come out grandpa won't trip and the baby sea turtles won't fall in as they are heading out to the ocean! Try and stay away from the dunes! this is where the mommies like to have there babies. And lastly always keep your dogs on the leash...you know they can sniff out a mother turtle and scare her so badly she may go back into the ocean without having her babes! The sand on the beaches is a brilliant white.

one of the docks at JekylThe history of Jekyll Island is fascinating! It began as a prestigious and elite place to get away from the busy world in the early 19th century. The Vanderbilt's and the Rockefeller's were among those chosen few to experience the winter retreat.. In 1886, and even today, you are blessed to be playing golf, bike riding, camping or having tea at Jekyll Island. Only the very well-to-do of the times were coming to Jekyll in 1886.
One of my first questions about Jekyll Island was where did the name come from? I would have bet it came from the scary book from Robert Stevenson " Jekyll & Hyde".  Close, but it was actually the other way around! Because of it's shape, the island was originally named Whale Island. But the island's colony founder, J.Oglethorpe was a great admirer of a lawyer by the name Sir Joseph Jekyll. And so, he named  beautiful Island after him. Furthermore, a distant relative of Sir Jekyll's was, Gertrude Jekyll, a famous gardener and artist had a brother that was friends with  Mr. Stevenson, he used his friend's name for the good guy in his book in 1886!

The heydays of Jekyll Island were so unique, the descendants, homeowners and employees of the island have published a book. The initial club members were indeed a very select few. However they have then as well as now, left their mark on the island. The cottages they built, the dedication to the preservation of the land, and the historic sites are just a part of what has made Jekyll Island the place to be!

Magazines of the times, touted that the Jekyll Island Club was one of extreme difficulty to join. JP Morgan Jr. and Will Rockefeller both saw and heard the very first transcontinental telephone call from Jekyll Island in 1915. Another part of Jekyll's uniqueness is the signed stained glass Tiffany window at the Faith Church. To date, there are only 4 in the United States. Until 1947, Jekyll was only for the private use of the upper class. But the state of Georgia bought the land and deemed it a playground for everyone.
